Methodology

Purpose and model boundary

This model estimates a protected A-weighted workplace level using either an individual fit-test Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) or OSHA Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) adjustment methods. PAR is the preferred individual decision basis. NRR modes are planning estimates derived from laboratory label ratings and do not demonstrate the attenuation received by a particular worker.

Inputs and units

The A-weighted unprotected level is always required because it drives NIOSH selection and dual-protection guidance. A C-weighted NRR method additionally requires a separately measured C-weighted level. The selected configuration is single or dual protection. PAR mode uses the fit-test rating for the complete fitted configuration; NRR modes use the labeled rating for each selected protector. Impulse/impact presence is an independent input to the dual-protection recommendation.

Governing relationships

For an individual fit test:

effective attenuation = PAR

protected level = unprotected dBA - PAR

For OSHA NRR methods, the active measured level is the entered A-weighted value in A-weighted mode and the separately entered C-weighted value in C-weighted mode. For a single protector in the OSHA adequacy method:

attenuation_A = NRR - 7 dB

attenuation_C = NRR

For dual protection, the workbook uses the larger of the two NRRs and adds 5 dB after the weighting adjustment:

The optional field-estimate method applies its 50% safety factor before the dual-protection addition:

For every method:

estimated protected level = active measured level - effective attenuation

The chart recomputes protected level across a range of unprotected workplace levels and overlays the 75 and 85 dBA NIOSH target references.

Calculation sequence

  1. Validate the selected method, configuration, impulse choice, unprotected A-weighted level, and method-specific visible inputs.
  2. In PAR mode, use the entered individual fit-test rating. In NRR mode, select the active A- or C-weighted measurement and calculate the appropriate labeled-rating adjustment.
  3. Apply the single- or dual-protection rule and calculate estimated protected level.
  4. Compare the estimate with the inclusive 75–85 dBA target band and the OSHA 90 dBA general and 85 dBA standard-threshold-shift criteria.
  5. Evaluate dual-protection guidance and status in the precedence below.

Outputs and interpretation

Effective attenuation is the deduction used by the selected method. Estimated protected level is a fit-test-based estimate in PAR mode and a label-based planning estimate in NRR mode. A result below 75 dBA indicates potential overprotection; above 85 dBA indicates underprotection. NIOSH recommends dual protection at unprotected levels of 100 dBA or more and for impulse/impact noise.

The status formula reserves OK for a valid individual PAR result in the inclusive 75–85 dBA band with the dual-protection recommendation satisfied. Target-band checks intentionally precede the recommendation and NRR caveat.

Assumptions and limitations

  • PAR is produced by quantitative individual fit testing for the exact fitted single or dual configuration.
  • NRR values are the labels for the protectors actually under consideration.
  • A C-weighted method requires an independently measured C-weighted workplace level; the calculator does not infer it from dBA.
  • An NRR calculation cannot establish worker-specific attenuation, and no product, manufacturer, or proprietary attenuation database is embedded.
  • The model does not assess fit-test quality, training, wear time, communication needs, compatibility with other PPE, octave-band spectra, or impulse peak attenuation.
  • Selection targets and adequacy screens do not replace a hearing-conservation program or competent exposure assessment.

Restrictions and non-computing states

The unprotected A-weighted level must be between 40 and 140 dBA. C-weighted NRR mode requires its 40–140 dBC input. PAR must be between 0 and 60 dB. NRR values must remain inside the workbook's declared label-rating bounds, and a second NRR becomes mandatory for dual protection. Undeclared method, weighting, configuration, or impulse choices are rejected.

Errors and warnings

NOT VALID means the selected method lacks a supported input state. CHECK communicates potential overprotection, underprotection, an unmet dual-protection recommendation, or the inherent limitation of an NRR-only estimate. A service error must not be treated as a protected-level result.
