Methodology
Purpose and model boundary
This model implements the 2021 Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation (RNLE) for one two-handed lifting task. It calculates Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) and Lifting Index (LI) at the origin and, when significant destination control is selected, at the destination. It does not calculate Composite Lifting Index for a multi-task job.
Inputs and units
The unit selector uses the official load constant and dimensional coefficients for US customary or metric input. The user enters object weight; horizontal, vertical, and asymmetry geometry; average lifts per minute; duration category; coupling quality; and whether RNLE applicability assumptions have been confirmed. Significant destination control exposes the destination horizontal and asymmetry inputs; destination vertical height remains part of travel-distance calculation in either case.
Governing relationships
The core equation is:
RWL = LC × HM × VM × DM × AM × FM × CM
LI = load / RWL
The load constant is 51 lb or 23 kg. For US customary inputs:

HM = 10 / H_effective
VM = 1 - 0.0075 × |V - 30|
DM = 0.82 + 1.8 / D_effective
For metric inputs, the corresponding formulas are:
H_effective = max(H, 25 cm)
D_effective = max(|V_destination - V_origin|, 25 cm)
HM = 25 / H_effective
VM = 1 - 0.003 × |V - 75|
DM = 0.82 + 4.5 / D_effective
For either unit system:
AM = 1 - 0.0032 × A
FM is selected from the embedded NIOSH frequency table using lift frequency, duration category, and whether origin height is below the 30 in / 75 cm boundary. Frequencies between published rows use the next higher row. CM is selected from coupling quality and vertical-height band: Good uses 1.0; Poor uses 0.9; Fair uses 0.95 below the height boundary and 1.0 at or above it.
When significant control is Yes, the governing result uses the smaller origin/destination RWL and therefore the larger LI. Otherwise the origin governs.
Calculation sequence
- Validate the unit system, positive object weight, origin/destination geometry, frequency, duration, coupling, and applicability selection.
- Apply the official minimum horizontal and travel-distance values.
- Calculate origin
HM,VM,DM, andAM; selectFMandCM; then calculate originRWLandLI. - If significant control is selected, calculate destination multipliers,
RWL, andLI. - Select the governing location/result, classify it around
LI = 1, and evaluate status below.
Outputs and interpretation
RWL is the modeled recommended weight limit for the entered geometry and task assumptions. LI is object weight divided by RWL; NIOSH recommends LI at or below 1.0. When origin and destination RWLs are equal, the governing location is reported as both. The chart varies horizontal hand location around the entered lift and compares origin RWL with object weight; it is a sensitivity view, not a second calculation method.

This is the exact Model_Status precedence in the workbook. An unconfirmed-scope warning takes priority over zero RWL and LI classification.
Assumptions and limitations
- The task is a two-handed manual lift/lower performed while standing, with a stable object and no mechanical assistance.
- The analyst has checked RNLE scope, including motion, footing, environment, task duration, and recovery assumptions.
- Lift frequency is the representative average over a 15-minute period. Duration categories and recovery periods must follow the RNLE definitions.
- RNLE is outside scope for one-handed, seated, kneeling, unstable-object, carrying, pushing, pulling, shoveling, wheelbarrow, severely restricted, very fast, poor-footing, or significantly out-of-environment lifts, and for work beyond eight hours.
- Published
FMrows are selected conservatively rather than interpolated. Full-precision multipliers can differ slightly from printed examples that round intermediates. - The model evaluates one task only and does not establish that a lift is safe for a particular worker.
Restrictions and non-computing states
Object weight must be positive. Horizontal location is limited to 0–25 in or 0–63 cm; vertical location to 0–70 in or 0–175 cm; asymmetry to 0–135°; and frequency to 0–15 lifts/min. Active destination geometry is required only when significant control is selected. A zero FM, VM, or other multiplier produces no positive RWL and a protected, non-dividing LI state.
Errors and warnings
NOT VALID means the task inputs cannot form a supported RNLE calculation. CHECK identifies unconfirmed applicability, zero RWL, or LI above 1. A calculation-service error is not a low-risk or zero-RWL classification.
